
The Caritas Cookbook
In January of 2019, Memphis chef Spencer McMillin reluctantly accepted what would become a pivotal chef position at a respected, but widely unknown, neighborhood nonprofit soup kitchen named Caritas Village, Promising to “stick around for a couple weeks until a younger, sturdier chef” could be hired, he ended up running the Caritas kitchen until the coronavirus pandemic forced them to close in April of 2020. Using recipes and his own personal narrative, along with those of his colleagues, McMillin tells the story of a remarkable fifteen months in the life of an important social institution through the lens of a lifetime spent in professional kitchens.
